Re: Smith & Wesson Rifle?
In Response To: Smith & Wesson Rifle? ()

In all of my research into the MSM I've never run across a company-sized group of men being armed with Henry Rifles, let alone a battalion-sized group. Could have been a Wesson Rifle. 24-inch barrel, six pounds in weight. .44 caliber. Highly accurate. Tests during the war had it hitting 20 consecutive shots in a target 200 yards away, and shooting 50 rounds in less than five minutes. That's a round every six seconds. Sounds like it would qualify as being "a very effective and desirable cavalry arm." Design was patented in 1859 and 1862 making it a "modern" weapon, and it seems to have been somewhat popular during the war. Regarding the Smith & Wesson Rifle, I would be surprised to learn that hundreds of men lining up and spending their scarce, hard-earned money on an obsolete rifle when they could be issued one for free by the government.
