Re: Rebel's Cove - Schuyler County Confederates

Some additional Schuyler County rebels were Henry Powell, my g-g-g-grandfather, his son John W. Powell, his step-son Benjamin Melvin, and his nephew Henry Hilton. All four of these gentlemen served with Porter in the 1st Northeast Missouri Cavalry. Henry Hilton was wounded and captured about the time of the raid on Lancaster in the summer of 1862. He died on January 1, 1863 and is buried at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis. Henry Powell, John Powell, and Ben Melvin all made it south to become part of Clark's Infantry Regiment (after September 1863 became the 9th MO) and participated in the Battle of Prairie Grove, AR. After the battle, Ben Melvin was left along the road to Fort Smith and his fate remains unknown. Henry and John Powell survived and were last stationed at Fort Pleasants near Pine Bluff, AR. In April of 1863 Henry was released from active duty at the age of 61 years and returned to Schuyler County where he hid out. John Powell was last on the muster roll of Clark's Regiment in April, 1863 and his fate is unknown. He probably died of disease during the summer of 1863 or may have been killed in the raids along the Mississippi River. Henry Powell later moved to Bates County with the remainder of his family, including John Powell's widow Sarah.
