I'd like to thank you both very much. I certainly wasn't familiar with the Goodloe name.
Is the Gregg Manuscript readily available on the net? I sure would like to read it. I haven't seen Hinsey's article either. (I have read the Frank Smith memoir.)

James W. Goodloe's wife was Rosa Belle Porter, daughter of Hugh Alexander Porter and Susan Mary Gibson. It seems that Hugh Alexander Porter was a soldier in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He first served in the State Militia under Capt. Smith and then enlisted in the Confederate army. He fought in the battle for control of Independence, and during this engagement had three horses shot from under him. He was discharged because of ill health.
