Craig,

The skirmish took place about dark the afternoon of 27 February 1865 three miles from Sturgeon in northwest Boone County. The Union patrol of 9th Cavalry MSM led by Lieutenant Luther T. Hayman of Company I (since your guy was from Company K, some of the troopers must have been from that company, as well), came upon Texan Jim Jackson and his band of eight guerrillas eating supper at the Schooling house and severely wounded two of them at the cost of one Federal mortally wounded and one slightly wounded. The Rebels escaped into the deepening gloom leaving behind five horses and 20 revolvers. Jackson's band the next day went into Randolph County killing and stealing near Allen and Milton.

The four sources I used include:
--Frederick Dyer "A Compendium of the War of the Rebellion," vol. 2, p. 814 (contains only the basics of the Union side of this fight);
--"Official Records," series 1, vol. 48, part 1, pp. 128, 999, 1089-90;
--"Bushwhackers," "Missouri Statesman," Columbia, Boone County, 3 March 1865;
--"A Career of Murder and Robbery," "Missouri Statesman," 10 March 1865, from the "Huntsville Citizen," Randolph County, of 3 March 1865.
