Late in 1862 an effort was made to raise a regiment of Missouri Cavalry to be commanded by Colonel Emmett MacDonald. Five companies, A to E, were organized and designated MacDonald's Regiment Missouri Cavalry. The regiment failed to complete its organization and the five companies became companies A to E, respectively, in the 11th (also called Young's) Battalion Missouri Cavalry, Companies F to H being added. About December, 1863, two more companies, I and K, were added and the organization designated 10th Regiment Missouri Cavalry.

This unit originally was Col. Emmett MacDonald's Missouri Cavalry Regiment. Due to casualities and MacDonald's death, it was reduced to become the 11th Missouri Cavalry Battalion under command of Lt. Col. Merritt L. Young. In fall of 1863, after it increased back to regimental size, it was redesignated the 10th Missouri Cavalry and commanded by Col. Robert R. Lawther

Maj. George W. C. Bennett

The regiment was organized in December 1863 using M. L. Young's 11th
Mo. Cavalry Bn. as its nucleus. It had 559 officers and men. The 11th
Mo. Cavalry Bn. was formed in the winter of 1862-1863 by reducing
MacDonald's Mo. Cavalrty Rgt. As a battalion and then a regiment, it
served in C. Greene's and J. B. Clarke's brigade, Trans-Mississippi
Department. It fought at Helena, Ark. and Bayou Fourche, La. before
being merged into the 10th Mo. Cavalry Rgt. As a regiment it took part
in Price's 1864 Missouri expedition where it lost 16 killed, 56 wounded
and 73 missing. It was included in the June 2, 1865 surrender of the
Trans-Mississippi Department.
