Source of General Lane Quote?

Bartlett's Dictionary of Americanisms (1877 edition) has this tidbit in the "jayhawker" entry:

"We are soldiers, not thieves or plunderers, or Jayhawkers. – Proclamation of General James Lane, Oct., 1861."

Can anyone point me to the source of this quote. I have a New York Times article summarizing an October 1861 speech by Lane, but this quote does not appear (although it would have been with the general theme of the speech.) I understand the Leavenworh Daily Conservative also covered the speech - perhaps it might be there?
