Re: William Cleland 11th Missouri Infantry (US)

Hi,

There is this reference:

Massachusetts soldiers, sailors, and marines in the Civil War Record for Massachusetts soldiers, sailors, and marines in the Civil War
Volume IV p 736
Massachusetts Men in Missouri Organizations

Cleland, William W 11th Missouri Inf
Res Chelsea, Mass
apptf 2nd Lieut Co F 21 March 1862
1st Liet 4 July 1862
Captain 20 September 1862
Major 29 March 1865
Mustered out 15 January 1866

I believe that William Cleland was the same William Cleland born 1840 [probably in Chelsea] son of Samuel Cleland and Adelia Ann Johnson. They were married in Boston in 1837 and lived in Chelsea, Massachusetts until at least 1860. Samuel his father was born in Ireland or England. Adelia his mother was born in New Brunswick, Canada, probably at St Andrews. She may have been associated with the Loyalists of the area, but I have yet to discover her parents.

I have not found any primary sources that confirm that William is the same, but the circumstantial evidence is consistent. I have not discovered any record of William after the war.

What further information do you have on him?
