In March of 1862 one James Henderson made an appearance in a few newspaper reports as recruiting Confederates in Lincoln County and Warren County. On or about March 23 a squad of Federals belonging to Morsey's Mounted Rifles Missouri State Militia Battalion left Warrenton in Warren County and went to the farm of a Dr. Briscoe outside of Marthasville, where a skirmish took place and Henderson was wounded and captured. He died of his wounds a few days later.

Morsey's Battalion was shortly afterward integrated into the 10th MSM Cavalry (which later was redesignated 3rd MSM Cavalry-New).

On Aug. 17, 1863 two guerrillas, Joe Cole and one with a last name of Briscoe (apparently the owner of the skirmish site, or related to him) met a D.G. Fitzgerald on the road near Hickory Grove, Warren County and shot him dead because he had provided the Federals the information that led them to Briscoes Farm.

There is evidence the squad of Federals in the original skirmish was led by First Sergeant James Wilson of Company B, Morsey's Mounted Rifles, who later went on to become one of the most prominent field officers in the Missouri State Militia.

I'm looking for information on Dr. Briscoe, as well as on guerrillas James Henderson, Joe Cole, _______ Briscoe, and the Briscoe Farms Skirmish. All I have been able to find is a two paragraph article in the St. Louis Republican from a Warrenton correspondent who made the report the day after the fight, along with two lesser one paragraph newspaper articles and a one paragraph entry in the History of St. Charles, Montgomery , and Warren Counties (which was written a quarter century after the fight).
