Incident at California

The journal of federal Cpt. Albert Tracy contains the following entry for October 8, 1861: "Make about ten miles and camp near the town of California---utterly denuded and deserted by its inhabitants. Windows and doors of the dwellings are either fast nailed or smashed wholly out, and a more melancholy exhibition in its way I have not seen. A chimney or two, standing amid areas of ashes and debris, show the marks or rather perhaps results, of a fight which took place recently in the town between the Home Guards and some raiding rebels. War indeed is leaving its marks--both upon the right hand and the left--" Does anyone have any additional information concerning the fight mentioned in this entry?
