Bruce: Messr. C. P. Anderson, proprietor of the Weekly California News, was a vocal critic of the federal occupation of Missouri during the early summer of 1961. In the July 6 issue he condemns the Yankee administration in Jefferson City, and refers to one Boernstein as "Dictator" to quote one epithet. There is no issue the following week, followed by an issue about the size of a sale bill dated July 20. The headline is "DESTRUCTION OF OUR OFFICE BY A MOB". Anderson says that on July 14 "some 200 United States troops stopped at this place, and immediately thereafter seven of the company, among them two officers, or persons wearing swords, and the balance armed with bayoneted muskets, went into our office, in a highly excited state of mind, swearing that they would kill us, (and we doubt that would have carried their murderous threat into execution had we not fled for safety} threw our office into a complete wreck, scattering our type in masses over the floor, and breaking our type cases to pieces with the butts of their muskets, and finally took off with them several important parts of the machinery of our press, which cost us a few months ago $250, rendering it wholly useless." Anderson continues, "We have laid our complaint before Col. Stevenson, who we have long known, and appreciated as a gentlemen, and hope he will see our wrongs speedily redressed, otherwise we are effectually ruined--". I do not know if he received redress for his grievance, but thereafter publication of the Weekly California News was spotty, and Anderson was confined to the guard house on several occasions, compliments of the provost marshal, for either thinking, uttering or printing thoughts and words which the occupiers found offensive. Do you have further information on this incident? Any possible association with Cpt Tracey's October journal entry?
