'Capt' Ed Doty's given name was Edward, not Edwin as listed above. He was a direct descendant of Edward Doty who came to America in The Mayflower. He was followed to CA in 1852 by other family members, including his parents, Ebenezer and Phebe Goodell Doty, his brother, Martin Doty and wife, Aurilla Evans Doty, with their two children, Mary Melissa and Julius; his two sisters, Mahala Doty Clark and her husband and two children; and Sarah Ann Doty Evans newly married to 'Fitch' Evans. A brother, Albert, came separately. Most assembled first in the San Jose area. 'Capt' Ed and brothers Albert and Martin later settled in Las Varas Canyon, on the South Coast of Santa Barbara County. For 100 years the canyon was commonly referred to as 'Doty Canyon'.
