Re: Pleasant Smelcer, 4th MO Cav (Conf)

His name was Smelcer, which is the way the family currently spells it and the way Pleasant signed his land grant records in Pulaski County. However, part of his military CMSR record is filed under Smelsor and Smelser. His CMSR states he deserted July 10, 63, in the remarks on the January - February 1864 muster roll, but the July - August 1863 muster roll states he was present--there doesn't seem to be a muster roll for the time period in between. I am really trying to pinpoint some documentation about his place and manner of death; right now all I have is family legend. He did not return home; the 1870 census has his wife and kids living with her mother and stepfather.
