Re: Missouri Troops victims of Steamboat Disaster

Here is what I recollect in brevity from my book.....Benteen was commandering a brigade of cavalry, the 3rd and fourth Iowa and the 10th Missouri. It was commonly known as Winslow's Brigade, but he was out of action with a wound suffered during Price's 1864 Raid through Missouri and command fell to Benteen who was acting commander of the 10th Missouri. Benteen had just finished his actions at Mine Creek, Kansas and his ill-pursuit of Price into Indian Territory. The Brigade was ordered to Cherokee Landing in NW Alabama to join up with the newly forming Cavalry Corps under Maj. Gen Henry Wilson but was stalled because of mishaps at St.Louis. They did later join up with Wilson and took part in Wilson's Raid across Alabama and Georgia and ended the war at Macon, Georgia. Wilson's Cavalry was responsible for capturing the fleeing President of the Confederate States of America. Jefferson C. Davis. Of course, Benteen saw later questionable action at Little Big Horn after the war...
