Form what the Iowa book says, the squirrel isn't scared to death, rather the concussion of the bullet hitting the bark so close to it stuns or kills it. erhaps the "barking" refers to the bark hitting the squirrel. The source says they aimed for the bark right under the squirrel's throat.
