OR vol 22 part 2 pg 521 has him mortally wounded and the Daily Missouri Republican 9-10-1863 page 2 has him dead as well.

Put it down to fog of war but he obviously survived his wounding. Still don't quite understand what transpired between June 65 and his arrival in Montana, but it sounds like he went west to save his skin or at least avoid 10 years in the state pen.
