Jay,

The ultimate authority reference on the southern Missouri State Guard is Peterson, McGhee, Lindberg, and Daleen's 1995 "Sterling Price's Lieutenants: A Guide to the Officers and Organization of the Missouri State Guard, 1861-1865," pub. in Shawnee Mission, Kansas by Two Trails Publishing. I see that Appendix C is entitled "The Semblance of a Weapon:" Arms and Equipment of the M.S.G." which runs from page 308 to about 312. If a fine Missouri library near you fails to stock this landmark reference to MO CW, berate them gently and then politely ask if they will help you through Interlibrary Loan to get a photocopy of those pages for a modest fee. Of course, I know that two to three of those authors monitor this site, and they may come in on this. I should add that you shouldn't expect much in the way of armaments for the MSG. Missouri didn't have a big enough budget to arm the approximately 14,000 men in that organization and, except for raiding the Liberty, Clay County, arsenal, not a whole lot fell into their laps either (Their hopes to get the goodies in the St. Louis Arsenal didn't pan out.). In other words, from studying writings on the Wilson's Creek battle of 10 August 1861 near Springfield, I believe with a few exceptions that the MSG operated on a basis of whatever you ride in with, carry in with, and wear into camp with is what you go to war with. The MSG for the most part was a "come as you are" sort of outfit even with all those thousands of guys in it. Even the Union forces in Missouri had to scramble in 1861 to arm all their guys, and MG John C. "Pathfinder" Fremont faced investigation later for all the European gun deals he embroiled the Federal gov't into.

Hope that will get you closer to your answer.

Bruce Nichols
