John,
Thank you so much. This clears up some questions that I had. you are right is Coleman's 4th MSG I am researching. I am trying to find out as much as I can regarding the Skirmish west of Smithville, Arkansas (right on the present day Lawrence/Sharp County Arkansas line) that occurred on June 17 1862. I was trying to determine why a company of the 4th MSG was operating this far south in a manner of the partisan rangers, before the partisan ranger units were officially operating. I was also surmising that being poorly armed led to the MSG defeat. The MSG soldiers were indoors, in an area known to men of the regiment, (Captain Jones and several of his men were from the area) and it was "pouring in torrents" during the time the 5th illinois charged the MSG.
