As far as I can tell from here in snowy Chicago, WOC was colonel of the 4th cavalry, 7th Div MSG, then made Colonel of the 46th AR. But having no connections with AR, I suspect he let Crabtree run the 46th while he returned to MO to raise a MO regiment--perhaps appealing to his former MSG troopers. Coleman wrote two articles that I can recall in Confederate Veteran about his military career, which I think you should consult.
