Re: John E. Highley
In Response To: John E. Highley ()

I am prone to answering my own queries but have made a determined search in the Provost Marshal Records for some item to confirm the September 20, 1864 St. Louis Dialy Union newspaper article which has a reference to John Hiley (Highley). This is for inclusion in an upcoming book which includes extensive research on Highley, The Prairie du Rocher Raid, etc. For other researchers interested in this guerrilla, dead several months before the St. Louis Union article, I will offer Union Provost Marshal File of Papers Realting to Two or More Civilians M416-44, Image # 534-537. (on Missouri State Archives Website) It is a letter to Ewing from St. Louis October 13, 1864 regarding a list of Union men in Washington County to be killed. No mention is made of Highley, but it is within the time frame of the Union article. My book has grown too much for inclusion of this piece of historical data--some other researcher will find it fertile ground for working.
