The Missouri in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Did Missouri Confederates recruit in Iowa?

Now, this is exciting. I am VERY interested in Iowa Confederate recruits.` What makes this all the more exciting to me, is that one of the counties that has been mentioned as a hotbed of the Southern cause, is Clark County, Missouri. Clark County is right across the Iowa border from LEE County, Iowa.

I have found BALLOU's enlisted in Missouri CSA units, formed mainly from northern Missouri. The other side of the family were BALLOU's, who were living mainly in the Montrose, area of Lee County, Iowa, but also, could be from Keokuk, or, even from Ft. Madison, both of which are in Lee County, Iowa. Montrose would make the most sense, as that is where most were, however, they could be anywhere.

The fact that I found a handful of BALLOU's in Missouri CSA units is interesting, as the spelling Ballou is the typical and original 1640's Rhode Island Colonies spelling, and is the Northern family. Many who went south because Ballews.

Any research that uncovers were some of these Missouri Ballous in Missouri CSA units, or, even in irregular units would be greatly appreciated. doniphan1966@gmail.com Looking for CSA connections to the Ballou side of the family from Iowa.

Thank you....
