Re: Did Missouri Confederates recruit in Iowa?

Bryce,

Thank you very much for your information on Captain Ballew. My laptop developed a trojan virus and is not operating. Before it did, I was able to find a couple of BALLOU's in Missouri CSA regular service. They seemed to have been recruited in northern Missouri.

I am very interested in following this thread to see if it can be determined if these Ballou's were from Lee County, Iowa, which borders CLARK County, Missouri, which I believe has been stated here that there was southern recruiting going on there. One side of our family, is BALLOU, from Lee County, Iowa, and there is interest to see if some of them fought for the south and if it is our particular family line.

There is a huge family book that was published in the late 1800's, entitled BALLOUS in AMERICA. In it, some of the Ballou's are missing, and others received short mentions compared to others. I have wondered if it is because some of them fought for the south. I have never been to Rhode Island. An aunt from Ft. Madison, Iowa was secretary of the BALLOU's in AMERICA. The officeres would meet annually in a log cabin church there in RI until it burned. I have read that the Roger Willams colony, where Maturin Ballou was.... " a co-proprietor with Roger Williams in his providence plantations in 1645."

This thread about CSA recruitment in Iowa, is most interesting. I do hope to learn if there is a list of CSA recruits, and if BALLOU's appear on that list.

Again, Bruce, thank you.
