Re: Guerrilla surrender, May 1865, Lexington list?

Richard,

The list on page 492 in the first "Branded As Rebels" book has exactly 80 names, all dated between 18 May and 28 May written the same way as the list in the Kansas City newspaper article of June 7. That newspaper list has about 160 names, that it claims all surrendered at Lexington. I wonder if 80 more men signed the oath between May 28 and June 7.

I notice that "___ Clements" signed on May 22 on the "Branded As Rebels" list, but that may not be Archie Clements, who I understand refused to sign at the initial offering and rode away to Howard County about that time with Jim Anderson, Bill's brother and a few men. I wonder if Archie's brother Henry is the Clements who signed the oath in Lexington to get his last name on the list. I checked with the newspaper list, and it has "H. Clements," as I suspected.

And, neither list has the names of Oliver Shepherd and his four men who surrendered at Liberty instead of Lexington, nor the men who signed at Columbia.

Interesting!
