Thanks for all this information, even if it's just proving where he
didn't serve.

John did stay in the AR/MO area, but I'm not sure which state he was
in for the war. He had a son in McDonald Co MO in 1862 and a son in
Madison Co AR in 1865. He then was back in MO in 1866, where he
stayed until 1900.

So it looks like the most likely answer is Coffee's Partisan Rangers?
Maybe that would explain why he doesn't seem to have received a
pension. I will see what I can find out about them.
