Re: William Pinkney Mitchell- Quantrill raider?

Sue,

Yes, ma'am, he was a bushwhacker. I assume you are talking about Wilson Leroy Tilley who lived on Roubidoux Creek four miles south of Waynesville, Pulaski County (in or close to the present-day reservation of Fort Leonard Wood). Mike Christeson in his 21 April 2010 reply on this same thread referred to the James King "The Tilley Treasure" book, and my advice would be for you to use your local library to view this book via Interlibrary Loan, as it is long out of print, but it contains the transcript material about the Union army tribunal of Tilley and a lot of other Union military material about Tilley. The full bibliographical reference to the King book is:

--King, James B. Jr. "The Tilley Treasure." Point Lookout, Missouri: School of the Ozarks Press, 1984.

And, no, W. L. Tilley did not ride with Quantrill.

Further, in case anyone would ask when they see the title of King's book, the buried treasure was evidently discovered by a bulldozer operator working on the old Tilley land for the Army in either 1940 or 1962 (the stories vary). One version says that the bulldozer operator's co-workers were amazed to see the bulldozer idling with the motor on and no operator present, because the operator took off with the tresure before someone could make him give it up his find to the authorities. I never did hear how that part of the story came out. The only Tilley treasure left is in the Civil War era stories.

I wish you good hunting.

Bruce Nichols
