Aug. 25 - "Swamp Fox of SE Missouri - a look at Jeff Thompson and the War" with Wayne Klinckhardt

Join us on Aug. 25, 2012, at 2:00 P.M. for an exciting look at the life of Jeff Thompson, notorious "Swamp Fox of SE Missouri”. Well known author of "The War for Missouri", Wayne Klinckhardt, will return to the museum with an all new program that will give us an up-close look at the life of this famous Confederate general who was in charge of the rebel forces in Southeast Missouri in 1861. Wayne will give you a glimpse into the life of the man, General Jeff Thompson, and present a chronology of Gen. Thompson's movements and activities (raids, etc.).

Sept. 21 - Third Annual Trivia Contest

Mark your calendars!!! Bring your team and your knowledge, to our Third Annual Trivia Contest Fundraiser at the Bollinger County Museum of Natural History on Friday, Sept. 21, 2012. Teams of 4-8 people, if you don’t have a team come anyway and we will see you get to play. Cost: $10 per person includes a Chili dinner. First place team will win half of the entrance fees collected. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and Trivia starts at 6:30 p.m.

If you would like to watch the contest and enjoy the meal without participating in the contest cost is $5.00 per person.

Entrance Fee for the Trivia Contest includes chili, drink, and dessert.

Please register your team by Sept. 17, 2012. We must have at least 3 teams registered to have the trivia contest.

Sept. 22 - Native American Pre-Contact history on the Southeast Explorer Bus

Learn about the life and culture of Native Americans in Southeast Missouri in these fascinating exhibits. Exhibits and activities are geared for grades three to six, but all ages are invited to explore and learn about our Native American culture. The bus will be in the parking lot of the Bollinger County Museum from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Admission to the Explorer Bus is Free!

Sept. 22 - Chief Paul White Eagle presents " Ceremonial Gathering: An Open Forum on Native American Culture"

Learn about the customs and traditions of the Cherokee people and the ways in which they influenced our region. Chief Paul White Eagle and some of the members of his AhNiYvWiYa tribe will perform a Native American ceremony followed by an open forum on Native American Culture.

Chief Paul White Eagles ceremony and program will start at 2:00 P.M.

Museum Day is an annual event hosted by Smithsonian Media in which museums all across the country, including Bollinger County Museum of Natural History, open their doors for FREE tours to anyone presenting a Museum Day ticket. Print your ticket at http://www.smithsonianmag.com/museumday/

Sept. 29 - Dr. Wayne Bowen presents “Confederates, Cubans and Conquistadores: Spain and the American Civil War”

In this presentation Dr. Wayne Bowen will take a look at the negotiations between the European powers, Spanish military maneuvers in the Caribbean, and the efforts by the United States to forestall Spanish aid to the Confederacy. During our American Civil War, Spain considered entering the war on the side of the Confederates States. Dr. Bowen will present his interesting and informative program, with photos, at 2:00 P.M. at the Bollinger County Museum of Natural History as a part of our Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day Live celebration. “Dr. Wayne H. Bowen is Professor and Chair of the Department of History at Southeast Missouri State University. He is the author of six books, and specializes in the history of Spain and the Middle East. His most recent book, “Spain and the American Civil War,” was published by the University of Missouri Press in 2011. Bowen is also a lieutenant colonel in the US Army Reserve, with service in Iraq (2004) and Bosnia (1998).”

Oct. 20 - Nation Fossil Day at the Bollinger County Museum

To celebrate the importance of the fossil record the Bollinger County Museum will host National Fossil Day on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012. Brent Ashcraft, amateur paleontologist and local educator, with a Masters degree in Natural Sciences, will present “The Sands of Time, A geologic and Ecologic History of Southeast Missouri”. This slide show covers Southeast Missouri from the formation of the Ozarks to the colonization by man, looking at the fossil and geologic record to reconstruct how Missouri’s ecology has changed through time.

Other activities of the day will include special exhibits of Missouri fossils and a fossil prep demonstration. Kids activities will include a fossil dig, a chance to make your own fossil, ages 5-12 years earn your Jr. Paleontologist badge and other activities that fit in with the fossil and geology theme of the day.

Bring your fossils or come to see our fossils and help us celebrate National Fossil Day, 2012.

Museum hours will be from 10:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.

Join us on Nov. 3 at 2 PM for this interesting program. Dr. William Traxel will bring alive his book "Footprints of the Welsh Indians". Learn about the early settlers in North America before 1492.
