Re: Heckart & Whitlock Mill, Marshafield

I place the Mill at the site of the public park on Banning Street, near N. Clay Street. This was in fact the site of the first clash of arms of the Pea Ridge campaign, when on February 9, 1862 Curtis' cavalry under Clark Wright struck out from Curtis' camp at Lebanon.

About Thomas J. Whitlock: "Quite incidentally, Whitlock had gone to California in 1850, and there discovered a vein of gold in an area near the Yosemite Valley that is still known as the Whitlock mining district. He sold out in 1852 and returned to Springfield before adding the Marshfield mill to his considerable Missouri holdings."
