That is a thoughtful observation, Red. I intended these books to fill both a reference and a general reading need, but sometimes that is an awkward mix.

Part of the problem is the episodic nature of guerrilla warfare. Hit-and-run fighting comes in spurts first here and then there, and the guerrilas' hope was to get the occupying forces to chase around until they become exhausted. When I was a young intelligence lieutenant and learning how to keep a general war-room operations board, the instructors taught us that our OPNS board wouldn't work as well for guerrilla fighting. They taught that about all we could do was place the incidents or specific raids or attacks on the boards as spots, not linear features, and then look for a pattern. You may have noticed this on police maps on crime dramas, as they simply have just a series of colored pins. You can see all you want to see in one glance!

On a different point, one of the problems I noticed with guerrilla memoirs was that so many of their skirmishes, ambushes, and running fights were so similar, that I found several instances where the guerrilla writing years later actually confused like actions. I also found I was often merging what I first thought were different actions, but participants provided enough details that revealed the same action another was describing. It was actually encouraging to me to find I had one action with several different versions, rather than what I first thought was a series of actions with a single version for each one.
