It is interesting to note that the account of the action at Independence given in the Semi-Weekly Shreveport News for 9 September 1862 states:

"The rebel officers killed as reported are Gen. John T. Hughes, Captains Clark and Barnett Chambers - Among the wounded are Col. G. W. Thompson , slightly in the leg; Lt.Col. John R. Boyd, of St. Joseph, severely, but not fatally; and Major Hart."

Boyd and Hart (possibly John J. Hart) had both been MSG officers, probably the 1st Infantry Battalion, 5th Division.
