Re: Absalom Miller Glenn - Killed by Bushwhackers

Forum,

There was a surprising number of gun battles in NE MO during January 1862, mostly between southern recruiting commands and Union forces. For example, about 500 Union cavalry (Iowa, Missouri, and Ohio cavalry) on 8 January 1862 on Silver Creek in SW Randolph County attacked Colonel J. A. Poindexter's recruiting camp of up to 800 cadre and recruits. The Federals claimed they killed up to 40 southerners, and wounded another 60, and captured 28 POWs compared to 5 or 6 Union KIA and 15 to 18 WIA. The Union cavalry backed off in the darkness because of heavy fog before they could verify much. Part of the fog could have been smoke since they burned camp equipment, kegs of gunpowder, and other supplies they captured. For your quest, this could mean that Private Glenn was mortally wounded in this fight near Roanoke on Silver Creek or some other fight, and died at or near home in Linn County by 16 January. I bring up this possibility if the wording "killed on 16 January 1862," would possibly include a man who was mortally wounded some time before 16 January 1862.

There were also two skirmishes in NE MO on the actual 16 January 1862 date, although no claim was made of southerners killed in either fight. A Merrell's Horse detachment in east Howard County or northwest Boone County captured Captain James. B. Watson and two other returned Rebel soldiers on 16 January, according to the Columbia "Missouri Statesman." In another skirmish this day nine miles north of Hunnewell, SE Shelby County, much of the Union 3rd Missouri Cavalry attacked a Rebel camp supposedly containing 280 southerners, and captured eight campers including Ramsdell Payne, as well as Harvey and John Kincade, according to the Columbia "Missouri Statesman."

I agree with Neil that the killing could have been by the Yanks, and not bushwhackers. The Union troops cited above seemed to be all regular Union cavalrymen.
