Sam, if you haven't already read it--there is a good discussion of the Northfield raid in T.J. Stiles' biography of Jesse James--at least of James' political motivations in attacking a bank where Ames, a leading Radical, had money. Stiles does not mention Ames stealing money or anything about Mississippi relatives, but still worth looking at if you haven't already.
