1860 census list Uriah as 46 yrs old in St. Clair County, that would be a bit long in the tooth to serve and being quite wealthy and a justice of the peace I suspect he was active in local politics as supporting the Confederate cause. This is supported by his son Samuel H Sutherland who served as an officer in the confederate 9th Missouri Infantry Co K under Parson.
