I am researching a 1st Iowa Cavalry 2nd Lieutenant and was wondering if I could get info on a 2nd Lt's duties. Are they usually with a detachment? Are they sent out as scouts just before striking a rebel camp? Do they always fight with the Captain of a regiment? I believe I am on to someone who fought Quantrill while serving in the 1st Iowa, but am not sure i can say if he did unless I might know more about his "importance" as a second Lt. I dont see his name on any wounded lists, but I know Capt. Gower appointed him as a 2nd Lt.
