The Missouri in the Civil War Message Board

This Post Is not About Bloody Bill

When reviewing a list of engagements and battles in Missouri during the Civil War the other day, I came across a number of terms used to define these conflicts. Among them I found the following lexical items: affair, action, engagement, skirmish, and battle. Can anyone explain how these terms are distinguished from one another?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Larry
