Re: Resaca-Do You know These Men or are You ?

Ron

Please look into this more when you have a chance, would love to hear more on this burial at Marietta, Ga.

As to Resaca and it's Battle, the bodies of the soldiers were buried apond the Battlefield in graves, some with no markers, the Green sisters returned to Resaca shortly after the Battle and found graves of the soldiers buried among the flower garden of there home and in area all around the battlefield. Resaca was Dedicated in Oct 26, 1866 but the reburials from the battlefield to the cemetery that was laidout for the green sisters started in early 1865.

The Aid Society that you speak of is the Georgia Ladies Memorial Assoc., of which Mary Green and her Cousin Mrs. Williamson were it's founders and leaders in the Reinternment effort of the battlefield of north georgia.

There has never in Mary Greens records, nor any other that I have found to date that shows of any soldier being removed from Resaca Confederate Cemetery to Marietta, Ga or any other Cemetery for that matter. This comes from 10yrs of research on this cemetery and the after action reports of the battle, along with statements from veterans of this battle and pension records. What I find interesting is that in the Macon, Ga. newspaper of the time he is listed burial there in Resaca, Ga. and in the Cuthbert Appeal, Cuthbert, Ga., who had a reporter there the day the Cemetery had it's opening he was among the names listed as being buried in Resaca, Ga.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that it's not a mistake, But in 10yrs of Research of this Cemetery and it's Battle and another 20yrs of Cemtery research, it's highly unlikely. There are too many postives pointing to one place and not another. Also check the reunion of this unit in Jackson, Ms. in the mid 1880's(correct time and date I'm still looking for)them read the roll of those lost in battle and there place of fallen/burial and there was a Capt. who stated he fell at Resaca, Ga. and was buried there.

Ron thanks again for your information and input. It great to have exchange like this on some of the subjects of the past.

William
