The census taker almost always spelled the name the way it sounded to him, so variations are possible.

River towns tended to attract younger single men who had a trade or profession, and many came from outside the state and even the region. This man is older, but he had a trade, and there could be any number of reasons that he might want to "disappear" and set up shop in a completely different area.

A book by a Confederate veteran who served in an Alabama unit happens to mention that he moved from Pennsylvania in late 1860. It's not unheard of.
