To Ron Skelie and Jamie Robert in particular, but to anyone having an interest in the above man: My interest is the Hampton Legion Infantry of South Carolina. Although a relative disputes my conclusions, it appears that Bethea served for a time in Co C of the Legion. I have his sketch showing he initially enl a 1 SGT E/7 MISS 4 May 61, and that he was promoted to 1 LT (I do not have aprticulars of his service with the 7 MISS). He failed of reelection and was dropped from the rolls Apr 62. He enlisted in Company C of the Hampton Legion (in all probality was conscripted) at Columbia, S.C. 1 Apr 63; he is shown as present on the rolls of the Comapny through the end of 1864; the Legion was reorganized as mounted infantry in Mar-Apr 64, and many men transferred out, if they could not obtain a horse. The S.C. Memory Rolls prepared long after the war indicate he was transzferred to another unit, but I ahve not been able to identify it. The rolls from Jan-Aug 64 are missing. He was born in Marion District, S.C. (Bethea is a very common name in that section); he graduated from South Carolina Medical College in 1858; he moved to Alabama, and then in 1858-59 to Pike County, Miss. He was practicing medicine at Meadville, Pike County, I believe both before and after the war. I understand that he was a Methodist minister (i assume a local pastor, not part of the itenerant ministry). I have him born S.C. 15 Dec 32, and died Summit, Pike County, 11 Dec 13, and buried in Woodland Cemetery in Summit. His conscription in 1863 would indicate he was back in his home state for a least a short while. I have checked census records and no other man fits the bill, at least that I can determine.
