Re: Robert Cochran Bethea, 7 MISS

Very interesting information. However, I can't prove something that is only anecdotal from a muster roll. [FYI he is also listed as D.C. Bethea in his CSR, clearly a transcription error, but his record for sure.] No where do I find Robert C. Bethea in the army after May 1862. His family life indicates that he was home in 1862 having fathered a child that was born in Sept. 1862. That child died in Jan. 1863. I doubt he would have left a wife and two children to fight in SC when he was needed at home where the war was already raging in Miss. If you find the name Robert Cochran Bethea on a roster in SC during the war after May 1862 and before May 1864. [He again fathered a child at that time] I would be willing to consider the possibility.

As many Bethea's as there were in SC, I have no doubt that there were others with the initials R.C. Don't forget that there were a huge number of Betheas from NC who also could have become involved with a SC unit. I too will review Mary Belle Mannings work, but my priorities make it impossible for now.

For now I hope you can find your RC Bethea, but until you prove Robert C. Bethea as your man, I can only say good luck in your search.
