The battalion was part of the "Army of 10,000" raised for sixty-day service. Here's a link for Dunbar Rowland's sketch of those units. Company "A" of the 1st Battalion was the "Buttahatchie Riflemen" of Monroe County.

Many of these men died of disease in West Tennessee before they could return home.
