I traveled to Edwards Station MS several years ago (1995?) to attend the 1st reenactment of the Battle of Big Black River Bridge MS. A very small reenactment, but I did have time to drive to where the battle took place. I have copies of my acnestor's letter detailing the battle. The ground seem to be just about the same as back in 1863! He was in the 23rd IA Inf (which led the bayonet charge on the Confederates).
My point in writing is to let you know that the grounds (even the groves of trees in the middle of the field) appear to be very similar to the way they were in 1863.
