Hello George Purvis, I told you a year ago I would work on the question of a hospital in Tupelo. I dont think there was one as such. Gentry/Battle of Tupelo, "Some of the few houses were in ashesw, others were filled with wounded, incuding 250 fed too severly hurt to be moved and few of those wounds had been dressed." Bearss/Brices C R "Forrest, who had been taken to a Tupelo field hospital, where the bleeding was arrested and the wound dressed." WPA Pro #3 1936, "After the confederate defeat at Harrisburg numbers of wounded soilders were caried to this home. Those who could travel were carried to Okolona in wagons." Tupelo Daily Journal/Cen Ed 1970 " that 210 men wrer killed in the action at Harrisburg and more than 1350 wounded. Many of these died later in field hospitals."Lee Co Lib/R976.2W926mMR "After the Battle of Harrisburg G Forrest was brought to thr Lutie McShann house on Johnson st 4 blocksE of 45 S to be treated for wounds that had reopened during the battle." Following thr civil war there were only six residences left standing and each in a grove of trees." I think there were only temp hospitals set up wherever ther was a roof and space, i e, the storage sheds along the RR track, Babtist church, Calhoun home, private homes just N of the present courthouse.
