There were a lot of deaths from illness around that time. The army had returned to Corinth after the battle of Shiloh in April, and remained there until the end of May, when it headed for the Tupelo area. There was a drought in the Corinth area, and many soldiers became ill from drinking poor water form sites that normally would not have been used.
