I grew up (1950s) on a farm only a short distance from the 13 Civil War soldier graves. Once myself and cousins camped out one night at the graves - which was never repeated. Stories that I heard from older folks in the area was that the soldiers had fought in the Battle of Corinth and had gotten detached from their command as the army retreated South towards Tupelo. All or most of the soldiers camped out East of the town of Saltillo were sick and afraid of being captured by Union troops patrolling the area. Local people living nearby brought them food, as often as they could. Battle of Corinth occurred in October and the following winter was apparently bitterly cold. One night the temps became particularly frigid and the soldiers froze to death. Thereafter, townspeople buried the soldiers where they had died and placed wooden markers. Their identity was apparently unknown. Years later marble markers were added but many of those were stolen. When I was a kid, only about 3 or 4 remained.
