Tippah Co. and Southern Illinois connection

My Gggrandfather, John Lewis Treas or Treece, was an early settler to Southern Illinois, then to the Purchase area of Ky and finallyTippah Co. Mississippi. As the war progressed he was torn between his stakes in northern Ms and his many kin in southern Il. at Jonesboro. In facy, many of the Il. troops refused to fight their kin in Ms and were disbanded.
John travelled back to southern Il. at the hight of the war and was captured by Iowan troops and was shipped off or killed in april of 1863 and never heard from again. Upon learning this, his sons went wild back in Ms and set out maruding with Col Streets group.
Would anyone have any knowlege of these kinds of events or know of material that would shed light on them.
John was from the little town of Walnut in Tippah co.
