I recently found a photo of one of my ancestors, James Hardeman Stuart. He joined the 18th MS Infantry in Jun 1861. He was soon after assigned duty as a signal officer on the staff of his 2nd Cousin, Gen. J.E.B. Stuart. He was killed in action at Second Manassas on Aug. 30th 1862 shortly after receiving his Captain's commission. I am not sure when this photo was taken and I know the quality of the photo is not good, but I was wondering if anyone has a clue as to what James is holding in his left hand.
