Sometimes men became older in order to get into a senior reserve unit (ages 45 to 50) and out of the regular army. I have seen several examples of men in their late thirties on the 1860 census who suddenly aged by almost ten years. It happened about the time the upper age limit jumped from thirty-five to forty, and then to forty-five years of age.
