Re: The Battle of Franklin... Animated

I have figured out that C. R. Hemphill, buried at McGavock Cemetery is the same person, C. B. Hemphill, as mentioned in the family letter. I found in the Hemphill family Bible (dating back to 1834) where C. R. B. Hemphill was born April 11, 1838 and C. R. Hemphill died Nov. 30, 1864 and later some one wrote in pencil, Franklin, Tenn. That would put him at age 26. He apparently had three given names and perhaps used only Charles Robert when enlisting.

Charles was the younger brother of A. J. Hemphill, my gg grandfather; both served in the 31th MS. A. J. had died Sept 22, 1863. Family notes say A. J. died of wounds while at home on medical leave; he is buried in Ackerman, MS. I have written for copies of his discharge papers for the MS Dept of Archives to learn if it was an illness or a wound. If there are any records of engagements involving the 31st in Aug or Sept of '63 where A. J. may have been wounded, I would appreciate that info.

Thanks, Ed Rea
