Soldiers usually remained at City Point less than twenty-four hours, being moved to Camp Lee in Richmond VA. From that point those well enough to travel by public transportation received a furlough. Otherwise they were admitted to a Richmond hospital until well enough to travel.

Linda, you will need to read the fine print at the bottom of the POW cards to get the exact date of exchange. Apparently this man passed through City Point twice. Think of City Point as a station rather than a camp. Yankees delivered prisoners by boat for exchange there. Confederate authorities received them on the wharves and provided transportation to Camp Lee. From that point they went home.
