I could not find your ancestor's name in the U. S. Civil War Soldiers Index at Ancestry.com. I tried many different spellings of the name Barnett but I was not able to find him. A record of his service may not have survived.

However, in the year 1910 your ancestor applied to the state of Arkansas for a Confederate Soldier's Pension and claimed that he had served in the 5th Mississippi Cavalry Regiment. His name appears in the pension index as follows:

Company I of the 5th Mississippi Cavalry was organized in Attala County, Mississippi and commanded by Captain Paul Turner. On the 1860 census your ancestor is shown living in Winston County which is next to Attala County.
