A Confederate veteran applied for a pension in the state where he resided, even if he served in a unit from a different state. The widow of a Confederate veteran could also apply as long as she remained unmarried.

The state of Mississippi began granting pensions in the year 1888.

There is a published index of these records found in many libraries, "Mississippi Confederate Pension Applications" by Betty Couch Wiltshire, a 3 volume set of books.

Isaac Newton Womble and his wife, Ellen Virginia Page, are buried in Paris Memorial Cemetery, Paris, Lafayette County, Mississippi. The inscription on their gravestones:

I. N. Womble
21 Dec 1846 - 21 Nov 1900

Ellen V. Womble
25 May 1856 - 10 Dec 1906
