Mike's very on-target comment made me think of another thing. To add to the carnival atmosphere I mentioned, photography was a very new curiosity, something that most southern people outside of the larger cities had never seen or probably even heard of. Everyone wanted their photo taken. I have seen some very ridiculous-looking huge knives in photos that I'm sure some sutler talked the young soldier into buying.
